HelloWorld! (what a fitting title for a Geek’s Blog)
Hey my name is Sachin and welcome to my blog – I a technologist turned banker turned tech entrepreneur (trying not to confuse myself) and small investor. I am currently the Chief Wizard and co-founder of nivio – a company trying to change the way desktops and software are delivered to connected devices.
I started my first company building PCs when I was 14, dabbled a little in Software building / hosting and then went onto to work at Deutsche Bank in London looking at innovation and automatic/robotic trading.
My real dream and that of our foundation (www.sachinsaurabh.com) is to educate 100m kids below the poverty line in the next 50 years using the cloud, technology and entrepreneurship.
Sachin Dev Duggal
Co-Founder & Chief Wizard, nivio, Co-Founder, Sachin and Saurabh Foundation
At 29, Sachin’s profile is a rich mosaic of experiences & serendipity. He was an entrepreneur at 15, worked for the United Nations and wrote the declaration of youth rights before he completed his first degree from Imperial College. Sachin has also built a successful software business and was a young investment-banker building complex trading models at 17. Sachin’s dream now hinges on his desire to educate 100m kids in 50 years by attempting to redefine the traditional computer model; using the “cloud”.
Sachin started his public foray very early in life, at the age of 12 he went on stage in front of 1200 people and the world media to demand something be done about the state of the environment. He further went on to work as a Youth Minister and wrote the Declaration of Youth Rights and handed this to UN Secretary General Kofi Annan.
Sachin’s career began at the age of 15, when he formed SMX Corporation along with a friend. They began operations (fixing computers) from his house. From there the company went through various iterations; from building PCs to virtual hosting onto software development.
In the midst of setting up this multi-million dollar business he obtained an Information Systems Engineering degree from Imperial College, joined Deutsche Bank as their youngest employee at the age of 17 & built systems that generate tens of millions of dollars for the bank. Sachin is continuously striving to change the world. At Deutsche Bank he was branded a serial innovator and shared the senior management table on the board of innovation. From that engagement, Sachin is still approached time and again for ideas and suggestions from his previous bosses.
In August 2004, Sachin co-founded nivio with his friend Saurabh Dhoot with a view to disrupt the old computing model; and got seed funding from two of his bosses! Originally named myremoteworkstation, he believed that the world of computing would change, become simple & hassle free. He dreamed of a desktop that was anywhere and nowhere; that was stress-free and fault-proof. Hence nivio!
Fast forward to 4 years later, nivio SA was selected as a Technology Pioneer at the World Economic Forum in January 2009. Sachin made history in being the youngest attendee and also one of the youngest in WEF Davos history to win the Technology Pioneer award.
Other accolades include the PriceWaterhouseCoopers Leader of Tomorrow, Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Finalist, the BBC Young Asian achiever of the Year and UNEP Global 500 Youth Award. Sachin is also the Youth Leader of the National Computer and Electronics Committee of the Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India.
But the real desire and mission behind how nivio was created centered always on the duo’s dream of 100×50 (100m kids educated in 50 years); through their Sachin & Saurabh Foundation, a not-for-profit set up to deliver that dream. As part of the foundation 25% of funds raised will be given to charities involved in nutrition, shelter and aid for children below the poverty line. 25% invested into other companies and 50% directly to foundation schools that focus on using technology to allow underprivileged kids to get ahead.
